Kenya’s Lawrence Cherono Wins The Men’s Boston Marathon By Two-Tenths of a Second After a Crazy Sprint Finish; Worknesh Degefa Dominates Women’s Race

  • The 2019 Men’s Boston Marathon on Monday ended in a sprint finish.
  • Over the final stretch of the race, Kenya’s Lawrence Cherono and Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa were locked in a dead sprint to the finish line.
  • Cherono edged out Desisa by two-tenths of a second, finishing the 26.2 mile race in 2:07:57 while Desisa finished in 2:07:59.

On the women’s side, the finish was exactly the opposite, with Worknesh Degefa leaving no doubt as she kept her competition out of camera range for most of the race and cruised to a comfortable victory.

  • Degefa from Ethiopia (who was running only her fourth marathon) finished in 2:23:31.
  • Kenya Edna Kiplagat finished second, and American Jordan Hasay finished third.
  • Des Linden, who won last year’s race, finished fifth in 2:27:00.
