We created this series as a way to help ordinary women runners tell their extraordinary stories. We have been inspired by the stories of other women runners and received much strength to know that we are not alone in our struggles. This week’s #WhatARunnerLooksLike Wednesday feature is Christina from @A_Year_to_Me.

Women’s Running Community (WRC): What Made You Take Up Running?

Christina (C): Taking up running was do or die for me. I started my weight loss journey at 375lbs. I started running at 350lbs. I picked up running because I knew the weight had to come off. I knew if it didn’t I was on my way to a massive heart attack.

WRC: What Do You Love About Your Body?

C: I love the fact the regardless of how i treated my body in the past, regardless of the way I neglected to care for it… it is still very capable of doing everything I ask of it now.

WRC: How Has Running Helped You Appreciate Your Body?

C: Running has taught me to actually appreciate my body plain and simple. There really isn’t a how. Before running i hated my body, now i don’t. I think its amazing for everything its endured and everything it does.

WRC: How Has Running Helped You Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, and/or
Generally In Your Life?

C: Oh my goodness! Physically ive dropped 138lbs in 15m, mentally and emotionally I have been able to keep my depression at bay. It’s made me a whole new person. I am happier in general, i deal with life better…ive learned to challenge myself and tale that challenge head on. I’ve learned how to push myself, and dig deep even when i feel there is nothing left.

WRC: What Do You Think About When You’re Running?

C: Well, when i am running i usually am thinking ..”how many more miles….” but i typically am always drawn to the fact and thought that no one else is gonna do this for me..if i stop now no one else will care, i wouldn’t be cheating anyone else…just myself… I also think abt the promise i made myself in May of 2016, 1yr of healthy living. See how much changes. In May of 2017 i promised to continue forward with that promise…

WRC: What Do You Love Most About Running?

C: I love the way it makes me feel like i can do anything. I end a run feeling on top of the world…and that’s why I go back for more.

WRC: What’s Your Favorite Part Of Being A Runner?

C: Challenging myself. Pushing to go further, to go faster, to get a PR….i love to challenge myself. I love that this sport is solely a competition against yourself…no one else matters…you try to be better then you.

WRC: Do You Engage In Other Sports or Activities? If So, What And How Often?

C: I am learning to lift weights…i do that abt 3x a wk…

WRC: How Do You Stay Motivated When You Don’t Want To Run?

C: Ice cream… No really, i sign up for races, pay well in advance…and that locks me in… I struggle…and I get in a funk on occasion. My pace suffers, my distance may drop…but I still go run.

WRC: Most Memorable Race Or Running Accomplishment?

C: Having only ran a 5k, i signed up and paid for a 10miler. That race was 6m away….the race ended…and I just couldn’t believe I accomplished what i set out to do….i just kept saying…”I can’t believe it’s over..” Bring on my first half!

WRC: What Is Your Best Tip Or Advice For A Newbie Runner?

C: Run/walking is ok!!! Don’t be ashamed. Get out do what you can…and try to do better the next time!

WRC: What Is THE Ultimate Quote You Live Your Life By If You Could Only
Choose One (explain)?

C: Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me .. whenever I doubt…i always come back to that verse… that and simply “I promise….” because of my promise to myself.

WRC: Is There Anything Else You’d Like To Tell Us?

C: If just like everyone to know … embarking on any kind of journey is hard, but the victory at the end, the satisfaction of it all…nothing compares…so keep pushing!!
